Course creators: What is the best digital course model for you?

course creation digitalcourse onlinecourse tutorial

Sorry to break it to you but ...

there is no one-size-fits-all online course model that works for everyone.

Beware. What this person you follow on LinkedIn swears is the "2023 thing" or "the new way" may not be the best answer for you.

Just like any exercise program or diet regimen, choosing the best online course model for you should be based on:

  • your circumstances
  • your personality
  • your business
  • your vision
  • your availability
  • your stamina

I've created a handy-dandy carousel to help you understand the basic structures/models of digital courses so you can make an informed decision. You can download it here.

Not sure what is best for you? Let's chat!

1 - SELF-PACED COURSES

The course materials are pre-recorded, and students complete the coursework online independently and on their own time.

This is called ASYNCHRONOUS learning, where students and teachers do not interact in real time.

Benefits:

  • No set deadlines or class schedules.
  • Flexible learning around other commitments such as work or family.

2 - INSTRUCTOR-LED COURSES

The teacher delivers the course content in real-time over the internet while providing guidance, feedback, and support.

This is called SYNCHRONOUS learning, where students and teachers interact live.

Benefits:

  • Real-time interaction.
  • Students get feedback on the spot.
  • Allows peer-to-peer collaboration.

3 - HYBRID COURSES

This model offers a combination of self-paced and live teaching. The students complete some of the pre-recorded course material independently, then attend live workshops providing in-person learning.

This is called BLENDED learning, offering students the best of both worlds.

Benefits:

  • Real-time interaction with teacher and peers.
  • Flexibility and self-paced learning.

Each type of learning and course model has its own unique benefits. Self-paced offers maximum flexibility. Instructor-led courses offer the benefit of face-to-face instruction. Hybrid courses offer the best of both worlds.
